CYCLING
& FITNESS

Always Moving Forward

"Music exercised the mind.
Cycling exercised everything else."

Russell loved being outdoors, staying fit and setting himself new challenges. Cycling wasn't simply a hobby it became part of his lifestyle.

Whether heading out for a quick spin, a long road ride or exploring new routes, time on a bike gave him freedom, focus and a chance to clear his mind.

Like everything else he loved, he approached cycling with enthusiasm, curiosity and an appreciation for quality equipment.

Whether it was a guitar, a camera or a bicycle. Russell believed the best things in life were worth investing time in mastering.

Russell owned several specialist bicycles, each chosen carefully and built for a different purpose.

THE SPEED MACHINE
Speed. Response. Performance.

Fast, responsive and built for serious riding. Like a well-crafted guitar, every detail served a purpose. This was a bike for pushing limits.

Russell helped out at Mike's Bikes for many years. He didn't need a job there - he already knew everything there was to know about bikes. The shop was simply another place where he shared his knowledge and love of cycling with others.

He had an incredible understanding of mechanic's components and maintenance, and he loved teaching others how to look after their bikes properly.  Nathan learned so much from Russell - how to fix, build and maintain bikes, and the satisfaction that comes from doing it. He even got him a work placement at Mike's bikes,

Russell loved watching the Tour de France each year. It was a tradition that never changed. Every summer I would buy him the official Tour de France t-shirts  of that year - something he always looked forward to and wore with pride.

Some of Russell's closed friendships were strengthened on two wheels.

Long rides often became long conversations. Music , recording gear, photography, fishing and life itself were discussed mile after mile on quiet roads.

Eddie remembers many cycling trips where Russell & Kevin would disappear into deep conversations about music, technology while everyone else simply tried to keep up.

The bike was never just transport. It was another way Russell connected with people.

FROM THE SADDLE

Russell put together this short video celebrating one of his favourite pastimes, set to Bicycle Race by Queen.

For those who knew him, it captures exactly what cycling meant to him - freedom, friendship, adventure and the simple joy of being out on the road.

Russell believed in staying active and always having a goal to work toward.

Cycling, gym sessions and long walks weren't chores - they were simply part of who he was.

He approached fitness the same way he approached music and photography, with discipline, curiosity and a desire to keep improving.

Fitness wasn't about competition, it was about feeling good, staying strong and making the most of life.

WHAT PEOPLE REMEMBER

EDDIE

"Not a day goes by that I don't think of Russell, especially while out fishing. He was definitely one of the good guys."

WAYNE & SALLY

A memory shared.

"We were good friends of Russell's, many times he was in our house with his bike for Wayne to look over it, and many a good night listening to him play in Cullen's."

NATHAN

Russell taught me so much more than how to fix or build a bike. He taught me patience, attention to details and the satisfaction that comes from doing things right. I will always be grateful.
